This is the layout of the apartment. Not 100% to scale, but tells the story!
Below are the janky photos of the living/dining room space that we have. The first four were taken on a sunny afternoon, the very first time we saw the space (with the previous tenants’ stuff still in there, of course). The photos that follow were taken at night after they moved out, as work was getting started.
A few things to note:
We’ll be swapping out the main ceiling light for the brass light fixture you can see sitting in the corner near the built-ins.
We will likely keep a similar layout they had (TV + couch on one side, dining room table on the other side), but we won’t have desks, etc. in there.
Note the wallpaper in the hallway—we’re keeping it(!) and it will peek out a bit and be visible from the living room.
The living/dining room is a long space, with two big windows that will bring in nice light throughout the day (and built-in shades that adjust easily).
You can click on any of the below photos on this page and they’ll open up in a lightbox for a larger view.
We don’t love the teal they had in the living room, but we want to still have an accent color in the same area of the walls, minus the very top stripe above the moulding (we’ll make sure that it’s re-painted white between the picture moulding and the ceiling).
The wainscoting and trim will otherwise remain white. We’re not looking to make a dramatic change or give ourselves tons of work.
Below, you’ll see rough mockups I’ll pulled together with some crappy software showing mostly things we already own (not really in the right places, but whatever) and a few things we’re planning to acquire for this space, as a way to sort of start to see which colors could work well and which ones definitely would not. I included a few shitty photos with the background removed of actual items and plants we have, too, to fill out the vibe. Note that the carpet is exactly what will be installed before we move in (it’s warm greige, so glad you asked!). And there will be lots and LOTS of plants!
Please keep in mind:
I am only open to blues and greens. Do not try to convince me that I should explore warm tones or bright purples. It’s not going to happen.
I am a little bit obsessed with the green rug, but Griffin is on the fence (and we do not yet own it). I’m not even sure if it works at all anywhere, but my obsession means it’s appearing in one version of each color just so we can see if it does play nice. Eventually there will be a rug or two either way, blah blah.
We’ll be getting peel & stick big paint squares of many of the below colors very soon, so we can look at them in all different kinds of light! And visiting House of Color, too! Your input is really helpful!!!
And now, if you made it this far… you also get to see what I’m playing with for the bedroom. It’ll be deep blue, just TBD on exactly which one!
